Diversity and Inclusion in Computer Science and Automation – Women in Engineering

Inspired by the liaison of IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE) and IEEE CSS Society, and following its mission to inspire, engage and advance women in CSSʼs technical disciplines, the idea of the proposed workshop Women in Engineering for the ICSTCC 2019 conference is to promote WiE. As such, it represents a first initiative within the ICSTCC conferences. The core of the round table discussion will focus on issues and solutions for diversity and inclusion problems. Reports on percentages and distribution among EU countries in computer science and automatic control will be given along with trends and bottlenecks.

Moderator: Prof. Dr. Clara M. Ionescu, Ghent University, Belgium, member of Task Force for Diversity and Inclusion IEEE/IFAC

Panelists:
Prof. Dr. Elena Helerea, Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania, Chair of the IEEE Women in Engineering Romania Section Affinity Group

Prof. Dr. Elvira Popescu, University of Craiova, Romania, Vice-Chair of the IEEE Women in Engineering Romania Section Affinity Group

Prof. Dr. Clara M. Ionescu obtained her PhD degree in 2009 from Ghent University, Belgium and subsequently the prestigious post-doctoral award for excellence from Flanders Research Foundation (FWO) in Belgium. She has coined the term ʽfractional order impedanceʼ within the topic of respiratory system analysis and as such, her publications are leading in this domain reported in Web of Science. She is member of the IEEE Engineering and Biology Society and IEEE Control Systems Society since 2007. Her research aims to bridge the gap between mathematical modeling concepts and clinical practice, therefore bringing an added value to the state of art in emerging disciplines in engineering. The topics of research cover modeling respiratory system, classification of respiratory diseases, modeling drug diffusion in anesthetized patients and depth of anesthesia control. Her papers cover application areas in both biomedical engineering as well as process control and mechatronics. She has more than 100 publications in Web of Science, a citation index of 19 and she is co-editor of several special issues in various fields of research. She is PhD supervisor since 2009 and she is currently guiding 8 PhD students. Currently she is involved in 5 international projects with both industrial and biomedical applications, for identification and control. Her main research interests include biomedical applications, with identification and advanced control objectives with special focus on anesthesia control.

EU Collaborative Resources for Young Researchers in Control Engineering and Computer Science

This round table presents the EU instruments and platforms for collaboration among EU research groups and focus on young researchers in control engineering and computer science. Reports on success and application rates will be given, for several programs. Additional information on two European master Programs will be presented as educational opportunities. Specific IEEE CSS outreach program opportunities will be also presented.

Moderators: Dr. ir. Cosmin Copot, Antwerp University, Belgium
Dr. Dana Copot, Ghent University, Belgium

Dr. ir. Cosmin Copot received his M.Sc. and M.E. degrees in systems engineering from Technical University of Iasi, Romania, in 2007, and 2008, respectively. He performs his master thesis as Erasmus student at Ghent University (Carpet Wear Classification using Support Vector Machine). In 2011 he received Ph.D. degree from Technical University of Iasi on control techniques for visual servoing systems. In 2012 he started at Ghent University as a post-doctoral researcher within the department of Electrical energy, Systems and Automation. Beginning with 1 December 2015 he is employed at University of Antwerp as doctor assistent within the Electromechanics department. Since 2008, he has published over 100 papers in technical journals and conference proceedings and has served as reviewer for multiple journals and conferences. He has been involved in the organization of several workshops and conferences (the latest is the IFAC conference on PID Control held in Ghent, 9-11 May 2018, www.pid18.ugent.be). He also has organized several special sessions at conferences but also special issues. His research interests include robotics, mechatronic systems, visual servoing systems and control engineering.

Dr. Dana Copot is the holder of the prestigious Flanders Research Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at Ghent University (FWO-UGent). She received the bachelor and master’s degree in chemical engineering in 2010, respectively 2012 from Gh. Asachi Technical University of Iasi, Romania. In 2018 she received her doctoral degree from Ghent University in the field of biomedical engineering. Her doctoral research includes developing models for characterizing properties in biological tissues. She is (co)-author of more than 40 scientific publications: 11 – A1 journals papers (cited in Web of Science); 2 – A2 journal papers (Peer Reviewed and not cited Web of Science), 19 – P1 conferences (cited in ISI Web of Science); 2 book chapters; editor of 2 books; 21 – C1 conferences (not cited in Web of Science); 2 books (to appear in 2018 and 2019). During her doctoral studies, she has been involved in the organization of several workshops and conferences (the latest is the IFAC conference on PID Control held in Ghent, 9-11 May 2018, www.pid18.ugent.be ). She has organized several special sessions and open invited tracks at conferences but also special issues. In 2017 she won the “best paper award” at the IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Engineering Systems. She was also involved in several research projects both national and international. Given her involvement in many research activities she has made numerous collaborations with research units in Europe in the application field of modelling for biomedical system control.
